Hallux Limitus
This term refers to reduced movement and stiffness at the big toe joint due to arthritis. It tends to get worse over time and can be painful.
Hallux Rigidus
Big toe arthritis is also known as Hallux Rigidus. As the condition progresses, movement at this joint is reduced.
Turf Toe
Turf toe is an injury to the big toe where the toe is stretched excessively in an upward position. This can stretch or tear the joint capsule. This often occurs in athletes especially in sports involving lots of change of direction. Treatment will depend on the severity of the injury to the joint but will usually involve a combination of anti-inflammatory measures and immobilisation.
Pigeon Toed (Intoeing Child)
If you are noticing that your child’s feet face towards each other when they walk, they may be pigeon toed. This is known as in-toeing and is very common in young children.
Gout
Gout is a very painful condition usually affecting the big toe. The joint becomes red, inflamed, swollen and very painful. It is due to a build-up of uric acid crystals within the joint.
