Ganglion cysts often develop on the top of the foot or ankle. They are a benign fluid-filled lump caused by fluid escaping from a joint or tendon sheath. Often they are painless but can become irritating and can make fitting shoes difficult and uncomfortable.
Ganglions may go away by themselves. Treatment usually involves modifications to shoes to ensure that the shoes do not rub or irritate the cyst.
If the ganglion cyst is problematic a doctor may use a needle to aspirate or remove the fluid from the cyst. The cyst may return after bring aspirated. If this is the case then surgical intervention may be required.
