I am a runner, do I need to stop running?
Running places a huge amount of force through your feet. 2-3 times your body weight is placed through your feet with every step.
Plantar fasciitis is caused by the plantar fascia being exposed to more stress and strain than it can tolerate, so its easy to see how running can cause a painful and irritated foot.
Can I still run with plantar fasciitis?
It is best to refrain from running until you have had a specific assessment and consult from your podiatrist. If you continue to run through plantar fasciitis you may risk doing more damage to your foot, which will take longer to heal.
Based on your individual circumstances, your podiatrist may decide that itās okay for you to continue running. They will likely help you design a running program to gradually load the fascia to prevent more damage. We strongly recommend having your podiatrist look at your running shoes and running gait to see if there are any things here that can be changed to reduce the force through your fascia.
Plantar fasciitis cures for runners
The general treatment for runners will be the similar to non-runners, with more emphasis on analysing your running gait, footwear and training program. Ensuring your foot is adequately warmed up and cooled down will also be an important consideration.
Plantar fasciitis running socks
If you have found compression socks to be useful these can be worn whilst running beneath your regular socks. This may help to support the plantar fascia and reduce how much it stretches and strains as you run.
