Lateral column overload is a broad term that covers a number of different conditions that affect the outside of the feet. The lateral column consists of the calcaneus (heel) bone, the cuboid, the 4th and 5th metatarsals and the 4th and 5th toes.
Pain usually develops in this area as a result of too much pressure being carried towards the outside of the foot. This usually occurs in either a high arched foot or a flat foot, as both of these foot-types will cause the force to be carried unevenly throughout the feet.
A number of specific conditions fall under the āLateral Column Overloadā diagnosis such as:Ā
- Sprain of the lateral ankle ligaments
- Sinus tarsi syndromeĀ
- Subluxed cuboid bone (Cuboid Syndrome)
- Peroneal tendinopathyĀ
- Fibula fractureĀ
