A tarsal coalition is the abnormal connection of two bones in the foot. This most commonly develops beneath the ankle and the midfoot. It can cause pain and restricted motion in the feet.Â
Coalitions may affect different bones within the foot and ankle:
- Calcaneus and navicular

- Calcaneus and cuboid

- Talus and calcaneus

- Talus and navicular

Treatment usually involves stabilising the joints within the foot with a combination of footwear, orthotics or braces. Occasionally surgery may be required.
