A Definitive Guide to Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) at Entire Podiatry

At Entire Podiatry, we are committed to providing personalised solutions to enhance mobility and comfort. Our comprehensive range of Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFOs) is designed to meet the unique needs of each patient. This guide details the types of AFOs available at our clinics, the conditions they treat, material comparisons and footwear options.

Types of AFOs We Provide

We offer a variety of AFOs tailored to different medical needs and patient preferences:

1. Off-the-Shelf AFOs

These pre-manufactured orthoses are ready for immediate use and can be adjusted to fit the patient’s needs. They are a cost-effective and convenient solution for many conditions.

2. Custom-Made AFOs

For patients requiring a more personalized solution, we create custom AFOs using 3D scanning technology. These AFOs are made from PA 11 (Polyamide ā€“ Nylon), a strong and durable material.Ā  However, our custom-made AFOs have a maximum height limit of 38 cm due to the physical build volume of the 3D printer and may not be suitable for patients with very large or heavy lower legs.

3. Richie Braces

We also supply Richie Braces, which can be either off-the-shelf or custom-made. These braces combine foot orthosis with ankle support, making them versatile for treating various conditions such as chronic ankle instability and posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD).

Conditions Treated with AFOs

AFOs are effective in managing a wide range of conditions.Ā  When choosing between an off-the-shelf carbon fibre AFO, a Richie Brace or a custom-made 3D printed AFO, the decision hinges on the condition and the patients unique needs.Ā  Here are some of the common conditions that are treated with AFOā€™s.

Cerebral Palsy

Custom or off-the-shelf AFOs and Richie Braces provide stability and improve gait.

Stroke

AFOs help with foot drop and provide necessary ankle support during rehabilitation.

Multiple Sclerosis

Manage foot drop and enhance mobility.

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)

If you have Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction, Richie Braces offer targeted support to prevent deformity and reduce pain.

Chronic Ankle Instability

AFOs and Richie Braces provide necessary support to prevent further injury for people with chronic ankle pain and instability.

Muscular Dystrophy

AFOs help maintain muscle function and assist with mobility.

Spinal Cord Injuries

Provide essential lower limb support, improving mobility.

Arthritis

AFOs help reduce ankle pain from arthritis and enhance joint stability.

Material Comparison for AFOs

The materials used in AFOs are crucial to their performance and cost. Hereā€™s a comparison of PA 11, used in our custom AFOs, with other common materials we can use, such as polypropylene in our Richie Braces and carbon fibre from our off-the-shelf options.

Material

Used In

Properties Advantages Disadvantages Common Conditions Treated

PA 11 (Polyaminde-Nylon)

3D-Printed

  • Lightweight
  • Flexible
  • High impact resistance
  • Good fatigue resistance
  • Highly Biocompatible
  • Customisable through 3D printing
  • Good balance between strength and flexibility
  • Durable in various conditions
  • Limited size due to 3D printer constraints
  • Cerebral Palsy – Particularly for moderate to severe cases needing custom support
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction
  • Arthritis

Polypropylene (Plastic)

Richie Braces and Off-The-Shelf

  • Semi-rigid
  • Flexible
  • High durability
  • Good fatigue resistance
  • Easily moulded
  • Slightly lower biocompatibility compared to PA 11
  • Customisable during the moulding process
  • Durable and resilient
  • Less breathable compared to other materials
  • May be heavier than the composite materials
  • Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction
  • Cerebral Palsy -For milder cases needing less customisation
  • Chronic Ankle Instability
  • Arthritis

Carbon Fibre

Ā
  • Extremely strong
  • Extremely stiff
  • Lightweight
  • High fatigue resistance
  • High energy return
  • Lower biocompatibility compared to PA11 & polypropylene.
  • Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
  • Provides high support with minimal bulk
  • Highly durable
  • Less flexible
  • Can be too rigid for some patients
  • Can sometime cause irritation or allergic reactions to sensitive individuals but usually encased in a protective layer
