Common Ankle Sprain
The outside of the ankle is the most common area to be injured in an ankle sprain, also known as an inversion sprain. This injury can affect the tendons and the muscles at the outside of the ankle.
Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
The sinus tarsi is the small depression located towards the front of the ankle. Occasionally this area can become compressed and painful, especially in those with flat feet.
Peroneal Tendinopathy
An overuse injury of the peroneal tendons presents itself as pain and occasionally swelling on the outside of the ankle.
Tarsal Coalitions
A tarsal coalition is the abnormal connection of two bones in the foot. This most commonly develops beneath the ankle and the midfoot. It can cause pain and restricted motion in the feet.Ā
Unstable Ankles
Generalised weakness and increased flexibility around the ankles can lead to ankle instability. LeadingĀ to frequent ankle sprains and often causes pain and swelling around the outside of the ankle.
