Pain outside of foot in children (Iselinās syndrome)
Iselinās syndrome causes pain on the outside of the foot in children. You may notice a visible tender lump on the outside of the foot. This condition is most commonly seen in children aged 10-14 years old and is slightly more common in girls than boys. It is caused by inflammation of the growth plate at the base of the 5th metatarsal.Ā
Thankfully, this condition will resolve when the growth plates in the foot fuse. This occurs in early adolescence, so this condition does not exist in adults. Treatment involves selecting appropriate footwear to avoid aggravating the area. Depending on the childās foot type and shape, footwear padding or orthotics may also be required to further manage symptoms.
